One of the lovely Ghurka wives that I teach has just given me these. She said that they can be either eaten raw or stir fried. They were growing on a huge climbing plant in her back garden and they have very spikey skins. Has anyone got any idea what they actually are?
Oh no. Fran, sorry! No clue! They look remarkably African to me though.
ReplyDeleteNot a clue here either, but very interesting looking. You'll have to let us know if you eat them and what they are like. - Margy
ReplyDeleteI don't know but the cut open one sure looks like those eyes and mandibles off the Alien doncha fink.

Googled alien doncha fink but they definitely are not that!!! However a more helpful friend has advised that they are achocha and are grown in Peru (mountainous like Nepal). They are lovely raw, bit cucumber/pea taste and fried taste like a sweet green pepper. Apparently they are very easy to grow and will take over given half a chance. Sounds like my sort of veg, so am going to save some seeds for next year.
